Growing capacity.
Strengthening systems.

Building capacity across all stakeholders — from farmers to policymakers — to help bring about regenerative and equitable food and farming systems in Southern Africa. Capacity extends beyond technical agricultural skills to financial and business skills, leadership and facilitation abilities to personal development.

Our Approach

KHSA’s capacity-building approach works on two levels. A Sector-wide Approach that focuses on creating an enabling environment working with media, training institutions and policymakers and a Multiplier Support Programme (MSP) that trains influential individuals to spark local agroecological action.

Sector-wide Approach

KHSA has worked with policymakers, journalists and editors, and universities and training institutions to create an enabling environment for organic agriculture and agroecology.

Broad Dissemination

Our cross-country communications team has reached more than 15 million people by sharing our success stories and knowledge products across the region and beyond.

MSP Approach

Our innovative MSPs were designed to fit the country context and needs of our chosen multipliers - from lead farmers and extension officers to promoters of participatory guarantee systems.

Highlights of Our Sectoral Approach

Policymakers

In Zambia, PELUM hosted workshops with policymakers and technocrats to
identify their knowledge needs; as a result they developed the Agroecological Multi-
Ministerial Policy Briefing Pack to support integrated decision-making related to food and
farming systems. In Namibia, NOA was requested by government to form a technical
working group to develop the organic sector in the country.

KHSA partners trained media in Malawi, Namibia and Zambia on organic
agriculture and agroecology. This culminated in a regional training programme for 42
journalists on integrated reporting on climate change. KIAE in Malawi developed a range of
resources in response to media’s needs for relevant knowledge about the sector, including a
Food and Farming Systems Jargon Dictionary.

In Namibia, NOA collaborated with the Namibian University of Science and Technology to co-develop a curriculum on organic agriculture and to host a series of hybrid expert dialogues. In Zambia, KATC trained 40 multipliers across three government-run training centres that cater to farmers, producing the Sustainable Organic Agriculture Manual for ongoing use.

PELUM Zambia trained grassroots leaders using local-language posters and tools, reaching hundreds of farmers through a multiplier effect. In Malawi, SFHC trained its Farmer Research Team, co-creating numerous resources, including a podcast series, which reaches thousands of farmers.

KHSA's MSP

Our MSP trains and supports individuals to become knowledge champions in their communities. These multipliers bridge the gap between research and practice, ensuring that agroecological knowledge reaches those who need it most.

With over 500 registered multipliers across Southern Africa, we’re building a dynamic network of change agents driving the transition to organic and regenerative agriculture.
